Squeaky colourful (burger) buns

These great, delicious buns were inspired by my dear friend Anna (feel free to check out her Instagram account!), who runs the great vegan café and restaurant Apple core & hummingbird in Bad Vilbel and originally also in Bad Homburg.

Would I rather have pink or yellow? Oh, I think I'm hungry for two rolls! 🙂

These yeast buns are baked in no time at all and are pretty much guaranteed to succeed. So I invite you to make your own buns the next time you eat a burger (with vegan patti, of course 😉 ).

Where does the colour come from?

The bright colours come from appropriately coloured foods that are simply added to the dough. Here we have chosen pink Simply use beetroot juice as the liquid for the buns. And for the yellow A little bit of turmeric was used in the bread rolls.

If you want to make it even more colourful, you can also experiment with powdered charcoal (e.g. from the pharmacy) in order to black to create buns. They're sure to be great for Halloween 😉

Or even a completely crazy idea blue be bread rolls. For example, the Magic Blue from Pure Raw are used.

Preparation time: approx. 30 min

Walking time: approx. 15 min

Baking time: approx. 12-15 min

Ingredients for approx. 8-10 rolls

  • 300 ml beetroot juice (or plant milk for "normal" coloured rolls)
  • 1 cube of fresh yeast
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 700 g spelt flour
  • 3 tbsp soft vegetable margarine
  • 1½ tsp salt
  • some plant milk
  • some quinoa and black sesame seeds

Preparation

Gently warm the beetroot juice and pour into a mixing bowl.

Crumble the yeast into the juice, add the sugar and leave to stand for 5 minutes.

Add the flour, margarine and salt and knead well using your hands or a food processor. Add a little more plant milk if necessary. The dough should be rather moist and very elastic and soft, not too dry.

Now form 8-10 round dough pieces.

Place on a baking tray with sufficient space between them, cover and leave to rise in a warm place for approx. 15 mins.

Preheat the oven to 170 °C.

Now brush the rolls with a little plant-based milk and decorate with quinoa and black sesame seeds as you wish.

Bake for 12-15 minutes at approx. 170 °C fan oven.

Note for the yellow variant:
Replace the beetroot juice with plant milk and then add a little turmeric to the dough when kneading.

Happy, colourful magic and enjoyment!

Your Katinka
